Our Story Began With a Simple Question

In 2015, a proposed pipeline route through three Indigenous communities in northern Alberta triggered consultations that left residents feeling unheard and frustrated. The government checked boxes. The company held information sessions. But genuine dialogue? That was missing.

Our founders — a former city councillor, a community organizer, and a public policy researcher — saw this gap repeatedly across Canada. Public consultations that felt performative. Town halls where the loudest voices dominated. Important decisions made before communities even knew they were happening.

So they asked: what if we built something different? An organization dedicated not to any particular outcome, but to the integrity of the process itself?

What Guides Our Work

These principles shape every consultation, workshop, and community engagement we undertake.

Process Integrity

We're not advocates for specific outcomes. Our commitment is to fair, transparent processes where all perspectives receive genuine consideration.

Radical Inclusion

Participation shouldn't depend on privilege. We design engagement approaches that actively reach marginalized voices and remove barriers to involvement.

Actionable Outcomes

Talk without action breeds cynicism. We ensure every engagement produces clear documentation and recommendations that can actually move through decision-making channels.

Local Ownership

We don't parachute in with predetermined solutions. Communities know their contexts best. Our role is to facilitate, not to prescribe.

Our Leadership

The team guiding unimutermo's mission across Canada.

Our Impact Across Canada

Since 2016, we've worked with communities in every province and two territories. Some highlights:

  • Facilitated community input that shaped Vancouver's Broadway Subway public realm design
  • Prepared 23 individuals to testify at the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
  • Supported Halifax Regional Municipality in redesigning their public engagement framework
  • Trained over 400 community leaders in effective civic participation skills
